She’s also graciously sent over a few pics to illustrate those facts. 😝⁣ ⁣ 1. I’m a first-generation Greek American. Both my parents are immigrants. (Pic 2)⁣ ⁣ (I went to northern Greece and Athens in May. Here I am at the Acropolis with a full heart.)⁣ ⁣ 2. I'm a Gryffindor. I’m also a Leo, so this makes sense. I’m a brave but sensitive lion-hearted gal. Deeply loyal to anyone who I consider a friend. But when crossed, I can be all gnashing teeth and claws or complete cold shoulder. Both in my own defense and the defense of people I love. I wear my heart on my sleeve, and because of that I don’t know a single person who has ever had to question where they stand with me, which is a blessing and curse. (Pic 3)⁣ ⁣ 3. This girl leaves for college in ten days. She got into 7 amazing film schools we couldn’t come close to affording so we waited to see if she’d get off the waitlist for a state school. She didn’t. We were devastated and had to readjust our thinking, our plan, our disappointment, and most of all our parental guilt. But—and this is for the parents and high schoolers out there—being the tenacious person that she is, my daughter appealed the decision and was granted that coveted admission 5 weeks ago. 5 weeks to get everything in order and pack. A situation where most families are given months to prepare, emotionally and logistically. And then, not one week following out elation, the school informed us they didn’t have room left in the dorms. Another dip in the rollercoaster ride, but we rallied and found her housing with other students off campus. The ups and downs and scrambling to process this would drive any person to the brink of being able to keep it together. If that weren’t crazy enough, the day after she learned she didn’t have housing, my publisher gave me line edits for my sophomore novel with a three-and-half week turnaround for a 400 page book, due 5 days before she leaves. I finished those edits yesterday with precious little time to spend with my daughter. But here’s the lesson. Don’t give up. Don’t take no for answer if you believe in what you have to offer. Don’t tell yourself you can’t do something before you try. I just read that a PAPER GIRLS graphic novel adaptation for television is happening. 😱 I’ve been hoping for this since my daughter put Vol. 1 in my hands and said, “You HAVE to read this!” And she was right! If you haven’t read Paper Girls, the series follows 4 girls who become enmeshed in an ongoing war between two time-traveling factions on Halloween night in 1988.
